Famous porcelain dolls are often part of expensive auctions, with some of the most prized porcelain dolls of today can reach sale price of up to several hundred dollars. He nonchalantly took the piece, pausing long enough to glance quickly at it while talking to some customers. There is no way to reach the bidder, and it's against the auction policy to interfere with an auction. There are many treasures to be found both on and off-line.

Much to my own delight, I could not find it again. In a way the Straits Chinese Porcelain for the Straits Chinese in Penang, Malacca and Singapore belongs here too but as a culturally distinct group with its decoration related to Ming dynasty Swatow wares. Sometimes oxygen entering the kiln during the firing would cause this effect. Another mentor escaped China during the revolution. The sugar would be pressed into a mould to form figures, temples, gates, carriages, gardens, and many other forms.

So how much can I get for that porcelain collectable doll today? The book takes a comprehensive look at all aspects of porcelain, and covers everything from its composition and workability, to decorating and glazing. Much to my own delight, I could not find it again. You need to be very good at whatever you set out to do if it is not going to become a disappointing experience. I know it happens, because I've seen it. I've seen many appraisals and have to say that most are lacking both in detail and information to back up their declaration.

Five turquoise-glazed vessels, Kangxi period and later. Then, this e-book is just the right thing for you! They were very heavy and could easily break, particularly in the joints.

They have quality photos that will aid in the identification of a style or period. Even the small things I look for were there. This is a common mark on modern pieces presently being made in China. A Meissen armorial oval monteith from the Swan Service, circablue crossed swords mark, pressnummer Buyer Beware Let's say a seller lists an item that has all the properties of authenticity, but the image is not clear and no macro images are offered.

How To Start A Porcelain Doll Collection

Some dolls may have a marking on the back of the neck, a design number or a tag sewn to the dolls cloth body or a tag inside the clothing if original or doll and clothing may be entirely unmarked. This ebook intends to keep you from wasting money on fake items which have no collecting value.

While the symbolism would be evident to Chinese collectors, if it happened to appear on a piece of export porcelain, it is unlikely that Westerners would have understood the meaning. Porcelain dolls created before the s are regarded Porcelain and how to collect it book antiques and Porcelain and how to collect it book easily fetch a higher price than models created after s.

Most of the antiques Chinese export porcelains does not have any marks at all. This focus on younger customers pushed sales into a new level, and the majority of toy sales until the s remained targeted at children.

Personally, I prefer a piece with some minor flaws. The clothing alone, maybe worth more than the actual doll itself. It was always of a higher quality than the general chinaware that the East India Company imported for general domestic use and usefully served as ballast for the cargo of tea.

No guide book on Chinese ceramics is more suitable for budding collectors. If very baroque decorative elements are combined with rococo or neoclassical elements, then the chances are that the piece is probably not genuine.

Meissen would often give Asian designs a kind of Baroque makeover, combining them with baroque European forms — as well as sometimes producing faithful copies of the Asian originals. Even if you are already involved in Chinese ceramics, you will find many hints and tips regarding the 'whys' and 'hows' of Chinese porcelain.

One still has to consider that a product created in Japan, in a kiln built by a captive Chinese potter, using Chinese material and the exact firing methods, is still a Chinese masterpiece. One final note on calligraphy. In this inspiring practical guide, porcelain artist Vivienne Foley introduces ceramicists to the material she has been working with for more than forty years.

However the best source for identifying the details of captains, the ships they commanded and dates of their voyages is to be found in A Biographical Index of East India Company Maritime Service Officers by Anthony Farrington The photos illustrating this and other articles are taken by me in and and are not published anywhere else.

Additives such as bamboo leaves, various woods and ferns, were also included in the firing process for certain effects on the glaze. Pieces which come from great collections always make more than they would if they were sold without that provenance. An estimated % of Chinese "antique" ceramics on the market today are fake antiques.
